Free Things to Do in Evanston, Illinois
by jazminmarie United States, Illinois, Evanston
Located just a few miles north of Downtown Chicago is Evanston, Illinois. Known by many because of Northwestern University, Evanston is popular with me because of how gorgeous and walkable the area is. Join me as I share some free activities available near Evanston, Illinois. Here are free things to do in Evanston:
Grosse Point Lighthouse

My first stop of the day was Grosse Point Lighthouse and I was not disappointed. It was my first time seeing a lighthouse and I didn’t know what to expect and the trip was worth it.
I definitely want to go back when the weather is a bit warmer because there seems to be a garden near by. Everything was dead or trimmed when I was there, but it was still a really nice area to be in. There’s actually a trail behind the lighthouse gives you a real intimate experience and some thing I completely didn’t expect.
There is parking on site and parking is free. You are allowed to walk the grounds and there is a small fee to go inside of the lighthouse. The website says that there are tours available, but I didn’t book one. You can read more on their website here.

Lighthouse Beach

The second stop on the list was walking distance from the first because it’s right behind it. Lighthouse beach is the beach adjacent to Grosse Point Lighthouse. You can find directions here.
Lighthouse Beach actually has a different parking lot then Grosse Point Lighthouse. During my visit I parked by the lighthouse and walked through the trail to the beach, but that isn’t practical for just a beach visit. If you’re going to the beach, I recommend parking in the beaches parking lot only.

Evanston Garage Door Gallery

Although I enjoy driving through the area, I wouldn’t make the trip just for the door gallery. In my mind I imagined several garages lined up with artwork, but the truth is it’s a bit more sporadic. I think some of the garages may have new faces. I was a bit disappointed, but the pop of color is definitely appreciated.
There is residential parking nearby, but I just recommend doing just a quick drive-through and leaving. The area is pretty tight so finding parking or stopping might be a bit difficult. You can find directions here.
